Study on Crusher Market Two

Case Study

A potential customer was crushing brown fused alumina using four hammer mills. The mills required hammer changes/turns every half hour. This created a lot of downtime, high wear costs and operator frustration.

After contacting their local Barmac PF agent, a Barmac Rotopactor was suggested as a suitable alternative. Following laboratory testing and wear costs analyses a MkII Rotopactor was installed with immediate success.

Wear rates, though quite horrendous by usual Barmac PF standards, were considered by the customer to be excellent. Generally, a rotor change-out every 8 hour shift was looked at, putting back in a re-dressed rotor and servicing the one taken out as necessary.

The installation of a Barmac PF has given this customer a significant market advantage by being able to produce increased tonnage at a reduced cost. Also, through continued liaison between the Barmac PF team and the customer, subsequent research and development into wear parts has produced various improvements in wear life. The original tip life of eight hours has been increased to twelve and sixteen hours.

When fine crushing, the energy required to achieve a finer product size dramatically increases.

This is well documented for tube mills such as ball and rod mills. Fine crushing and grinding power requirements are generally in the order of 5 kwh/t to 20 kwh/t.

As new technology, such as the Barmac PF, has been introduced to industrial mineral applications, fine crushing has become less expensive. The energy transfer from the spinning rotor to the particle is very efficient, resulting in fine crushing with a minimal power requirement.

When processing highly abrasive materials the time taken to change wear parts and resurface wear parts can lead to very limited plant availability and decreased production.

The rock-on-rock crushing action of the Barmac PF allows minimum wear to metallic wear parts. This gives the highest availability of any machine when working in abrasive materials. Less time is required for resurfacing or changing of wear parts.

The simple and easy to use design of the Barmac PF ensures the rotor, if required, can be lifted out of the crusher and replaced in less than a hour. This maximises plant production. The replacement cost of wear parts are amongst the lowest on the market, further improving the profitability of an operation.
